Children's Toys: Renderings from the Index of American Design

December 12, 1980 – March 12, 1981

On view are 24 watercolors depicting toys in the United States from the Colonial period to the end of the 19th century. Included are renderings of rag and cornhusk dolls, painted cast iron banks, a fire engine and train, and a harlequin jumping jack. The Index of American Design is made up of some 17,000 watercolor renderings and is part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art.
