On view are 30 Amish quilt made from 1880 to 1940—the classic period of Amish quilt production—in Holmes County, Ohio, home of the largest Amish community in the Midwest. The exhibition explores both the value of the quilt within the Amish community and the relationship between quilt design and abstract art. The exhibition also looks at the spiritual values of the Amish faith—humility, simplicity, devotion—woven into these textiles. The quilts are on loan by Chicago residents Faith and Stephen Brown. The exhibition is co-curated by Julie Silber and Robert Shaw, and organized by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.
