Arthur M. Sackler Gallery
1050 Independence Ave., SW
Washington, DC
After arriving in London in 1859, American artist James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) set out to capture the rapidly changing urban environment. The Sackler’s first major Whistler exhibition presents more than 70 works from this definitive period—paintings of famed London sites in Chelsea and along the Thames River, as well as prints and rarely seen drawings, watercolors, and pastels. The survey culminates with some of Whistler’s stunning, iconic nocturnes.
