An American Diary and Memories of Childhood: Paintings and Prints by Roger Shimomura

An American Diary is a series of 30 small paintings by Roger Shimomura inspired by diary entries written by his grandmother, Toku Machida Shimomura, between 1941 and 1943. Mrs. Shimomura began keeping diaries in 1912, when she left Tokyo to move to the United States. The series of diaries, which span 56 years of her life, include her account of the World War II internment experience of 120,000 Japanese Americans. Memories of Childhood is a series of prints that depict the artist's memories of his own internment experience from age three to five.
