The majority of the 25 paintings and 5 pieces of sculpture in this exhibition were shown in the American gallery at the Philadelphia Centennial of 1876; the few exceptions are works by artists who were represented in the Centennial. They include landscapes, portraits, genre paintings and still-lifes.
Among the artists represented are John LaFarge, Daniel Huntington, Sanford Robinson Gifford, William Trost Richards, Worthington Whittredte, William Merritt Chase, Jerome Thompson, Peter Frederick Rothermel, Christian Schussele and John Rogers.
