Caption: This painting by David Bethuel Jamieson features two entangled abstract figures. The figure at left's simply rendered features, including its cut-paper eyes and nose, sweeping cheekbones, and white, passive face are contrasted with the multi-layered features and gnashing teeth of the larger female figure on the right. A jagged, horizontal black line of torn and collaged paper passes through the center of the work, while the pink background dips in and out of the figures. The composition is replete with a sense of motion and angst that is characteristic of the David Bethuel Jamieson’s work. The artist created this painting in Burlington, VT around the time of his AIDS diagnosis, which prompted his subsequent return to Washington, DC, where he would spend the remainder of his short life.
