- A generation of women balancing career and family found an inspirational role model in attorney Clair Huxtable, the strict yet loving mother of five children portrayed by Phylicia Rashad on the television sitcom The Cosby Show (1984–92). Through her Emmy-nominated performances, Rashad created a feminist icon and one of the most impactful black women characters in television history. She went on to pursue a distinguished career as a stage actor and director. In 2004, Rashad became the first woman of color to win the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress for her performance in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun (1959). Her Tony-nominated performance in August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean (2003) followed in 2005, and she has subsequently directed several of Wilson’s plays. In 2011, Rashad was named the first Denzel Washington Chair in Theatre at Fordham University, and in 2016, she was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame.
