- An inscription reads “FOR WIDAL TEST / OR OPHTHALMIA / HEALTH DEPARTMENT, / CITY HALL, / PROVIDENCE.” The Widal Test, a quick procedure for diagnosing typhoid fever, was developed in 1896 by the French bacteriologist, George Fernand-Widal (1862-1929).
