- This is the primary backup payload for what flew as Explorer 1. Built originally as a payload for Vanguard, this object was part of the effort of redesign to make the instrument compatible as a payload for Explorer. The object includes electronic and mechanical elements of the initial "Deal" payloads designed and built by the University of Iowa. The entire package of components is catalogued as 20060086000 through 016. These components are original and have been in George Ludwig's possession since they were built in the late 1950s, with the exception of intervals when the components were used at JPL. Donated by Dr. George Ludwig in 2006.
