- Catcher Al Evans played Major League Baseball from 1939-1951, excepting for 1943, when he served in the US Navy during the Second World War. A reserve backstop, Evans was a fixture on the Washington Senators’ roster until joining the Boston Red Sox his final season. The right-handed hitter from Kenly, North Carolina had a lifetime .250 batting average, with 514 hits, 13 home runs and 211 runs batted in.
