There have been calls for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History to cut ties with funders affiliated with the fossil fuel industry, asserting that an association taints the museum’s credibility regarding climate change science.

We want to address that concern by explaining two important points about the Smithsonian.

First, the Smithsonian policy is clear: Control over the content of any museum exhibition or program rests solely with the Smithsonian.

Second, the Smithsonian’s official statement on climate change, based upon many decades of scientific research, points to human activities as a cause of global warming.

Maintaining the great trust and confidence the public has placed in the Smithsonian is paramount to the Institution. The Smithsonian’s mission is to increase and diffuse knowledge without influence or bias.
