The Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press and the Smithsonian Institution Libraries have collaborated since 2005 to enhance Smithsonian outreach through the Internet and increase accessibility through digitization of all of the legacy volumes of the Smithsonian Contributions and Studies Series. In April 2007, six of the eight series were digitized and made available. The final two series, Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology and Smithsonian Contributions to Astrophysics, are now available at http://www.sil.si.edu/smithsoniancontributions/.

To date, this series is the largest digitization project to be completed by the Smithsonian. With more than 107,000 pages scanned, 1,072 volumes of Smithsonian research and contributions to knowledge, in a wide range of subject areas, are accessible to the public through the Internet for the first time. The following series are now available as high-resolution PDFs:

  • Smithsonian Annals of Flight (1964-1974)
  • Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology (1965-present)
  • Smithsonian Contributions to Astrophysics (1956-1974)
  • Smithsonian Contributions to Botany (1969-present)
  • Smithsonian Contributions to Folklife Studies (1980-1990)
  • Smithsonian Contributions to History and Technology (1969-present; formerly Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology)
  • Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences (1969-2002)
  • Smithsonian Contributions to the Marine Sciences (1977-present)
