To generate a global “BiteMap” of fish feeding, ecologists placed stakes with dried squid bait (“squid pops”) in seagrass beds and underwater mudflats. The researchers were able to place underwater cameras beside the squid pops at roughly one-third of their research sites, allowing them to see which animals were eating the squid pops.
