About Us

Drawing from extensive expertise in such disciplines as public administration, organization and management theory and practice, museum studies, sociology, and economics, OP&A offers an array of relevant multi-method research services.


OP&A is backed by a highly qualified team with training and experience in anthropology, behavioral science, economics, English, environmental science, museum administration, organizational development, policy analysis, political administration, political science, social science, statistics, urban planning, and other fields.


Office of Policy and Analysis' (OP&A) internships are available to undergraduate and graduate students. OP&A internships provide experiences in conducting quantitative and qualitative policy-related studies of major Smithsonian programmatic and administrative activities. In addition, the office conducts studies of Smithsonian visitors and program participants.

Professional Development

OP&A provides professional development for both US and foreign-based museums.



This section contains documents on the following issues: Board of Regents; responsibilities of governing boards—promulgation of guidance on operations and behavior; delegation of authority to chief executive; oversight of and accountability for organizational and managerial performance; hiring and firing of senior management.
