National Museum of African Art
950 Independence Avenue, SW
Washington, DC

Sublevel 1 Floor Plan

The museum commemorates its 25th anniversary as part of the Smithsonian with Treasures, a changing exhibition that will interweave masterpieces from the museum's collection with artworks from public and private collections. Treasures focuses on traditional artworks that reflect the "ideal standard" in beauty, moral behavior, leadership, intelligence, and fertility as envisioned by African cultures. On view are objects dating from the 14th to the 20th centuries, from simple forms of household utensils to monumental sculpture. This exhibition encourages visitors to look at these masterpieces in new and innovative ways and to appreciate the rich variety of their form and meaning.
