Sokari Douglas Camp: Church Ede, A Tribute to Her Father

March 21, 1999 – June 20, 1999

National Museum of African Art
950 Independence Avenue, SW
Washington, DC

Point of View Gallery, Sublevel 1 Floor Plan

This exhibition showcases the work of Nigerian artist Sokari Douglas Camp (b. 1958). The artist has created figurative works in steel that evoke memories of her youth in southeastern Nigeria. In 1984, on the death of her father, she made Church Ede, a monumental kinetic sculpture reminiscent of a Kalabari funeral bed, as a tribute to her father. This exhibition of Church Ede and its preparatory painting, in conjunction with the three works in the pavilion, showcase all the works the museum owns by this Nigerian artist.
