June 10, 2001 – September 16, 2001

National Museum of African Art
950 Independence Avenue, SW
Washington, DC

Sublevel 2 Floor Plan

This exhibition examines more than 140 objects that reflect the influences of the supernatural world in both public and private life throughout sub-Saharan Africa. These objects from former Portuguese colonies -- including Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau -- range from large, awe-inspiring fiber and animal initiation masks to small, exquisitely created dolls, pipes, stools, and stele. On loan from The National Museum of Ethnology, Lisbon, Portugal, many of these objects have never before been seen in the United States.
