As part of a project organized by the Sackler Gallery, a selection of objects reflects the influence of Portugal on African art forms and African artists' response to Portuguese presence in Africa, beginning in the 16th century. Objects are drawn primarily from national and international private and museum collections. In addition, objects relating to Portugal, the Indian Ocean, China, Japan, and Brazil are on view in the related exhibition under the same title Encompassing the Globe: Portugal and the World in the 16th and 17th Centuries at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery.
