National Portrait Gallery
8th and F Streets, NW
1st Floor Floor Plan
On view are 72 portraits and self-portraits of major American artists from the collection of the National Academy of Design. Shows how portraiture in the U.S. has changed from 1839 (when the Academy first requested portraits from its members) to the present and reveals the variety of conceptions that artists have had of themselves and their peers.
Organized by John Dobkin, National Academy of Design assisted by Wm. H. Gerdts, City University of New York, and Michael Quick, Los Angeles County Museum.
