Molecular Evolution Fellowship Program 2000 Application

MOLECULAR EVOLUTION FELLOWSHIP

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

The 2000 Smithsonian Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Evolution will be offered to support research at the Institution’s National Museum of Natural History's (NMNH) Laboratory of Molecular Systematics (LMS) at the Museum Support Center in Suitland, Maryland. Primary research areas of interest include molecular systematics, evolutionary genetics, and phylogenetic analysis. Applicants should contact, prior to proposal submission, at least one of the members on the LMS staff (Michael Braun, Elizabeth Zimmer, or David Swofford) and any other NMNH staff member(s) who might be involved in the research project proposed.

The fellowship’s application and award process is administered by the Smithsonian’s Office of Fellowships and Grants (OFG). The attached application materials for the 2000 Molecular Evolution Fellowship include guidelines, instructions, cover sheets, letters for your referees, and the publication, Smithsonian Opportunities for Research and Study. All these materials are also available at our Web site: www.si.edu/research+study.

The enclosed publication, Smithsonian Opportunities for Research and Study, outlines the National Museum of Natural History's research activities and lists the research staff. In developing your proposal, you are strongly encouraged to consult LMS and NMNH staff well in advance of the proposal deadline. Additional brochures and publications detailing specifics of LMS research and facilities are available upon written request. For further information concerning staff, facilities, or specialized equipment not adequately addressed in Smithsonian Opportunities for Research and Study, please consult Drs. Braun, Swafford or Zimmer at the LMS, Museum Support Center, 4210 Silver Hill Rd., Suitland, MD 20746; telephone: 301-238-3444; fax: 301-238-3059; e-mail: braun@lms.si.edu; swofford@lms.si.edu; zimmer@lms.si.edu).

PROGRAM GUIDELINES

1. Qualifications for Application

Applicants must propose to conduct research at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History's (NMNH) Laboratory of Molecular Systematics (LMS) for a period of 12 to 24 months. Applicants must have completed or be near completion of the Ph.D. Recipients who have not completed the Ph.D. at the time of application must provide proof of completion of the degree before the fellowship begins.

No employee or contractor of the Smithsonian Institution may hold a Smithsonian fellowship during the time of his/her employment or contract, nor may an award be offered to any person who has been employed by or under contract to the Institution in the previous year, without the prior approval of the OFG.

Applicants whose native language is not English are expected to have the ability to write and converse fluently in English. All application materials must be presented in English (foreign transcripts may be translated, see page 5 below).

2. Application Submission and Deadline

All applications must be postmarked by January 15, 2000. Applications mailed after the deadline or received too late in the review process cannot be considered. Faxed or electronically submitted applications will not be accepted. Exceptions to the deadline and submission requirements may be made for certain supporting materials (such as transcripts, and letters of recommendation if sent directly by the referee).

Send applications to: Office of Fellowships and Grants, Smithsonian Institution, 955 L'Enfant Plaza, Suite 7000, MRC 902, Washington, DC 20560-0902.

Notification of decisions will be mailed on April 15, 2000.

3. Criteria for Selection

Applications are evaluated and fellows are selected on the basis of the proposal’s merit, the applicant’s ability to carry out the proposed research and study, the likelihood that it could be completed in the requested time, and the extent to which the Smithsonian, through its research staff members and resources, could contribute to the proposed research. The Smithsonian Fellowship Program does not discriminate on grounds of race, creed, sex, age, marital status, condition of handicap, or national origin of any applicant.

4. Conditions of Appointment

Molecular Evolution fellowships are awarded for periods of 12 to 24 months in accordance with the applicant's proposal for the research, unless the length of tenure requested is considered by reviewers to be more than required. A major portion of the appointee’s research must be conducted at the Smithsonian. In accepting an appointment, the fellow will be expected to devote full-time effort to the research proposed.

Financial support, in addition to a Smithsonian fellowship, for such purposes as research travel and equipment may be received from other sources provided that no special demands are made upon the fellow's time. Permission to receive additional stipend support must be requested in writing from the OFG.

Tenure periods must begin between June 1, 2000 and March 1, 2001. It is important that applicants consider the following factors carefully when choosing the dates for the proposed fellowship: their academic schedule; completion dates of their dissertation; the schedule of their proposed advisor/host and the availability of required resources. The dates of tenure proposed in the application (and any change of dates if the fellowship is awarded) should be selected in agreement with the proposed principal advisor. Appointments must begin on the 1st or 15th of the month.

In submitting an application for a fellowship at the Institution, the applicant does not incur any obligation to accept the appointment if selected.

5. Use of Smithsonian Facilities

Fellows will be provided with appropriate space to conduct their research within the department in which they are working, and with the equipment necessary for their work. Applicants should consult in advance with their proposed advisor(s) regarding the availability of facilities and equipment. The amount of support services available to the fellow will be determined by the workload of the department and the policy of the department chairperson and/or unit director. Fellows have privileges at the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, which include borrowing library materials, interlibrary loans, intralibrary loans, document delivery, database searching, and reference assistance.

6. Stipends and Allowances 2000 - 1999

The stipend for Molecular Evolution Fellows ranges from $27,000 for one year (twelve months) to $54,000 for two years (twenty-four months). Stipends are prorated for periods between 12 and 24 months. In addition to the stipend, a travel allowance to assist with the fellow’s temporary relocation to the Smithsonian is offered.

To the extent possible, all equipment and supplies necessary to complete the research will be provided by the host department, but applications should include a budget detailing the project’s research equipment needs and explaining any other anticipated sources of support. This budget should not include costs for relocation to the Smithsonian, which is awarded separately. Travel or living expenses of dependents are not provided.

All funds provided under Smithsonian fellowships, including stipends and travel allowances, are subject to tax.

If you have any questions about completing this application, please feel free to write or call this office. We look forward to receiving your application.
