Volunteers at MCI take part in the Smithsonian's Office of Visitor Services Volunteer Management Program. Opportunities may be available in a variety of areas: scientific, outreach and administrative. Volunteers provide a service to the Institution and do not receive any payment. Although volunteers may derive many of the same educational and enrichment benefits as interns, their efforts are viewed primarily as contributions to the on-going work of the institution. The majority of volunteer assignments are of an indefinite duration and involve a minimum weekly commitment.
The Volunteer Management Program offers challenging alternatives to the more public-oriented volunteer activities and provides assistance to Smithsonian staff by recruiting and placing individuals who wish to contribute their time and expertise to specific areas of study within the Institution. Volunteers in this program work with staff members on both short-term and long-term projects. Placements are determined by matching volunteer qualifications, knowledge, interests, and availability with project requirements. Volunteer assignments can be arranged in most disciplines and museums.
