Abstract

Emmett Duffy is an evolutionary ecologist whose research explores the origins, maintenance, and importance to society of marine biological diversity. With help from the Smithsonian, his long-term research in the Caribbean has documented the systematics, ecology, evolution, and behavior of symbiotic shrimp as a model for understanding the evolution of advanced social organization in animals. Dr. Duffy is Professor of Marine Science at the College of William and Mary’s Virginia Institute of Marine Science. He received the Ph.D. in Marine Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2006 he was awarded an Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellowship, he has served on editorial boards of several journals, and on the Stewardship Committee for the online Earth Portal. He has published a recent volume on crustacean social and sexual systems, and >60 peer-reviewed papers. His research has been featured in the BBC’s Blue Planet series and in various media outlets.
