Judith Winston is currently
Curator of Marine Biology at the Virginia Museum of Natural
History, and a Research Associate of the NMNH. From 1980-1992
she held curatorial positions at the American Museum of Natural
History. She was educated at Brown University (A.B., 1966),
the University of New Hampshire (M.S., 1970) and the University
of Chicago (Ph.D., 1974), and held a postdoctoral fellowship
from the Smithsonian Institution from 1974-1976. She began
working on ecology and taxonomy of Indian River area bryozoans
during the months she spent at the Smithsonian Marine Station
while carrying out her postdoctoral research. Over the years
she has returned to carry out many bryozoan-related projects
at the lab, including a study of the population biology of
free-living cupuladriid bryozoans, and a revision of the MCZ
specimens of Smitt's " Floridan Bryozoa" (1872-1873).
She has also carried out marine research at STRI and at Carrie
Bow Cay.
