James W.C. White

James W. C. White
University of Colorado, Boulder
ABSTRACT

James White is Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences and in the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He is also a Fellow in the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research. Dr. White currently serves on the National Academy of Sciences’ Polar Research Board, which acts as the U.S. national committee for the International Polar Year 2007–2008. He is a past member of NSF’s Office of Polar Programs’ Advisory Board, and a past Chair of the U.S. Ice Core Working Group. James’ areas of research include study of the global carbon cycle, both modern and in the past, and reconstructing past environmental conditions using ice cores. He was one of the first scientists to identify abrupt climate changes that typify large climate shifts on our planet. Over the past two decades he has been an investigator on five, NSF funded, deep ice-coring projects in Greenland and Antarctica. He is an author on over eighty peer-reviewed publications, and is a Highly Cited Author in the Geosciences. At the University of Colorado Dr. White teaches courses in Environmental Studies, energy, the carbon cycle and climate change. He has worked to break down disciplinary barriers between the social sciences, natural sciences, journalism, arts and business to train the next generation of students in the area of environmental change.
