Timothy McCoy is the Curator-in-Charge of the National Meteorite Collection at the National Museum of Natural History. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii before holding a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. His research interests include the melting of asteroids in the early history of the solar system, reflectance spectroscopy as a tool for understanding meteorite-asteroid connections, the volcanology of Mars, and planetary missions. He was a Participating Scientist on the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous mission and is currently a team member on the Mars Exploration Rover mission. He oversees the Smithsonian’s role in the U.S. Antarctic Meteorite Program, a collaborative effort between the Smithsonian, NASA and the National Science Foundation for the collection, curation and distribution of meteorites collected in Antarctica.
