Jerry Kooyman is a research professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography since 1967 where he joined the Physiological Research Laboratory directed by Per Scholander. He holds an AB from UCLA, and a PhD from the University of Arizona. Kooyman has led nearly 45 expeditions to Antarctica and his most recent project in November 2006 involved aerial surveys of emperor penguin colonies in the Ross Sea. Kooyman Peak in Antarctica was named for him in 1966. In 2005, he was the first recipient of the Ken Norris Lifetime Achievement Award from The Society for Marine Mammalogy. In March 2007, Kooyman was the recipient of the Quadrennial Finn Ronne Memorial Award of the Explorers Club. Jerry has published over 160 scientific reports and authored two books, Weddell Seal, Consummate Diver, and Diverse Divers, Behavior and Physiology, and was co-editor of Fur seals, Maternal Strategies on Land and at Sea. Recipient of the 2007 Explorer's Club Finn Ronne Memorial Award for Polar Field Science.
