The devastation wrought on the residents of the New Orleans, Louisiana area and the Mississippi and Alabama Gulf Coasts by Hurricane Katrina is beyond description. It will be weeks, months, and years before life returns to any semblance of normalcy for many of these residents.

In the wake of the destruction from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the immediate response has been, of course, directed toward the human life, health, and safety issues facing New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. In turn, the recovery of cultural institutions and their associated collections, including historic structures, will contribute to community restoration and reconstruction as well as the preservation of the heritage of the Gulf Region. Toward this goal, the Smithsonian is committed to the national relief effort by joining our fellow museums and national service organizations in offering support and assistance to affected cultural institutions.
