THE CASTLE TRIO
The members of The Castle Trio (pianist Lambert
Orkis, violinist Marilyn McDonald, and cellist Kenneth Slowik)
have
been performing
together
since 1984, on a range of appropriate "period" instruments,
a repertoire that stretches from Haydn to Ives.
Their concerts have been enjoyed by audiences across the
United States and Canada, and in locations as diverse as
England and Central America. The Castle Trio has recorded
the complete trios of Beethoven, plus works of Schubert,
Dvorak, and Smetana, for which the group has received several
awards and universal critical acclaim.
Their appearances as trio-in-residence at the Smithsonian
Institution's National Museum of American History regularly
draw capacity crowds, with many performances distributed
by National Public Radio, the BBC, and other international
broadcast systems.
The BBC Record Review captured the essence
of the Castle Trio's success then it opined: "This
is a trio of real virtuoso players who savor the sonority
of the old instruments
and who play beautifully together."
For listeners who are not particularly
keen on historically-minded performances, the English record
magazine Gramophone stressed: "Any
fear that concerns for authentic period sound and performance
style might mute projection is immediately banished by the
Castle Trio's rhythmic vitality, sharp-pointed accentuation
and keenness of response. Their textural and dynamic contrasts
make you listen to this music with new ears."
Fanfare Magazine put the case even more
simply, calling the Castle Trio's interpretations "fragrant,
vital, altogether convincing music-making."
