Discovery Theater Performance
(for ages 5-10) Celebrate the warmth of holidays of light -- Devali, Sankta Lucia, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, Christmas, and First Nations tradition of the Winter Solstice -- in this special program with audience interaction for all!

Ask an Expert
Stationed within the exhibition, a museum or NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) scientist shows collection specimens or artifacts (including some under the microscope and/or shown on a monitor) and talks with visitors about travels to various locations, field studies, collection of specimens, new discoveries, favorite topics of study, and more.

Lecture Special Tour World War II Mail and Memories
Exhibition Tour
To mark Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, curator Lynn Heidelbaugh leads a tour of the related exhibition to reveal a World War II innovation that "miniaturized" mail onto microfilm to lighten cargo loads and boost morale. She then leads a conversation circle with participants to share memories of wartime, letters, and V-Mail.

Performance, with preconcert tour
Young participants in Vermont's annual Marlboro Music Festival bring the excitement of this prestigious gathering to the Freer with performances of Mozart's String Quintet, K. 614; Mendelssohn's Octet, op. 20; and Janacik's String Quartet no. 1. Festival veteran Scott St. John, violin and viola, is joined by emerging artists Jessica Lee, Yonah Zur, and Miho Saegusa, violin; Maiya Papach and Mark Holloway, viola; and Susan Babini and Na-Young Baeck, cello.
Note: Free tickets (up to 4 per person) can be reserved in advance through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 202-397-7328 or 800-551-7328 beginning at 10 AM two Mondays before the event. Lecture Parrot Talk: When Being a Birdbrain Is a Compliment
Lecture, with book signing
Are Grey parrots clever mimics or are they capable of independent thought? This evening, Irene Pepperberg (research associate, Harvard University) and Richard Restak (clinical professor of neurology, GW University) discuss the difference between human and parrot intelligence and, using video clips, share humorous stories of their pet parrots. Book signing follows.
