Experience the distinctive sounds of a Balinese gamelan orchestra and dramatic dances from the island's Hindu-Balinese traditions as the Washington area's own Gamelan Mitra Kusuma (Flowering Friendship) performs a program of classic and contemporary repertoire. Guest artists I Gusti Ngurah Kertayuda, I Made Lasmawan, and Luh Made Dwi Wahyuni joins gamelan director I Nyoman Suadin for this event.

Patrick's Sacred Mountain: Croagh Patrick and Ireland's
Pilgrimage Tradition: Lecture |

The mountain of Croagh Patrick in Western Ireland has been regarded as religiously significant since at least the 6th century A.D.; a church built at its peak is still in use today. This evening, Irish archaeologist Michael Gibbons places the mountain in its wider Irish and European context, discusses the mythology surrounding it, and shows how archaeological investigations have both clarified and distorted the picture of Croagh Patrick left by written and oral evidence.

Puerto Rican Films of DIVEDCO: Juan sin Seso and Modesta

The Smithsonian Latino Center presents two short films from Puerto Rico that reflect the political, social, and economic changes taking place on the island during the 1950s and 1960s.
• Juan sin Seso (1959, in Spanish with English subtitles) This humorously didactic short film warns against the dangers of consumerism.
• Modesta (1956, in Spanish with English subtitles) This short film is a comical but poignant declaration (and negotiation) of women's rights on the interior of the island of Puerto Rico.
