This festival features panel discussions on literature and media arts, author readings and book signings, and more. Speakers include authors Tahmima Anam (A Golden Age), Indra Sinha (Animal's People), Manil Suri (The Age of Shiva and The Death of Vishnu), and Naeem Murr (The Perfect Man). Sponsored by the Network of South Asian Professionals of Washington DC (NetSAP-DC) and the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program. Celebrate Thanksgiving a bit early. Hear about Native foods -- many of which can be found on Thanksgiving tables today -- and see how they are prepared. Learn about the importance to Native people of the three sisters: corn, beans, and squash. Try traditional corn grinding, make a cornhusk doll, take a special family tour, and learn how to gather seeds for planting next spring. Celebrates American Indian Heritage Month.

(for teenagers) Encompass' Compassion Play's production KICK explores racial stereotyping and the issue of using American Indian mascots for sports teams. When Grace Greene, one of the few Native American students at Newman High School, decides to take a stand against her school's "brave" mascot, she learns that sometimes sports are far more than just fun and games. Preceded and followed by discussion. Celebrates American Indian Heritage Month.

Join Devi Dance Theater for retellings of classical stories about the Hindu deities Rama, Krishna, and Shiva. Hear poems from the Hindi Ramayana of Tulsidas and see how the culture of 16th-century India still influences contemporary choreography. Note: Free tickets (up to 4 per person) can be reserved in advance through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 202-397-7328 or 800-551-7328 beginning at 10 AM two Mondays before the event.
