Native Americans have served in the U.S. military since the American Revolution and, by percentage, serve more than any other ethnic group in the armed forces. To honor their service on Veterans Day, historian Herman Viola discusses his new book Warriors in Uniforms: The Legacy of American Indian Heroism. Afterwards, hear a panel discussion with Native American veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq. Book signing follows. Celebrates American Indian Heritage Month.

This evening, James McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and one of our greatest living Civil War historians, illuminates Abraham Lincoln as a military leader. He begins with a discussion on how Lincoln invented the idea of Commander-in-Chief before delving into Lincoln's military approach and ends by explaining how Lincoln masterfully and carefully molded public opinion about the war. Book signing follows.

For the third year, The Smithsonian Associates and the National Museum of the American Indian offer the rare opportunity to experience the classical arts with a Native twist. This evening, Italian pianist Emanuele Arciuli performs works by five major Native composers: Louis Ballard (Quapaw/Cherokee), Raven Chacon (Navajo), Barbara Croall (Odawa), George Quincy (Choctaw), and Brent Michael Davids (Mohican), and works by two non-Natives, John Adams and Andrea Morricone. Celebrates Native American Heritage Month.
