Lecture The Ocean: Treasures from the Deep
Thursday Mornings at the Smithsonian: Lecture
The ocean is ancient, essential to all life, constantly changing, and just beginning to be explored. To celebrate the opening of the Natural History Museum's new Sant Ocean Hall, this lecture series features curators discussing various aspects of the ocean. Today, Jeffrey E. Post (curator of the National Gem and Mineral Collection) discusses some of the world's great pearls, including those in the Smithsonian's collection. Pearls were once thought to be gifts from the gods.

Lecture Pioneering Conservation Practices
Lunder Conservation Center Lecture
Harvard University's Fogg Museum of Art was an early pioneer of modern U.S. conservation practices and established the first research and conservation department for a U.S. museum in 1928. This evening, Francesca G. Bewer (research curator, Straus Center for Conservation, Harvard Art Museum) discusses how and why the Fogg Museum promoted a more scientific approach to the restoration and preservation of works of art, and explains how this approach affected the education of museum professionals, restorers, and artists during the first half of the 20th century.

Dog lovers Gene Weingarten, a nationally syndicated humor columnist and Pulitzer Prize-winning staff writer for the Washington Post, and Michael Williamson, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer for the Washington Post, tell heart-warming stories while showing heart-warming photographs of mutts, elegant purebreds, junkyard dogs, little dogs, and big dogs -- all of whom were at least 10 years of age when their portraits were taken.
