Lecture
Celebrate Family History Month by learning how to document the lives of your loved ones with historian Maria Goodwin and museum educator Robert Hall, who share practical advice and examples on researching and recording personal history. Discussion includes census records, personal files, photographs, and other family valuables. Participants are asked to bring in personal items for discussion.

ImaginAsia Family Program
(ages 8-14 with adult) Explore the exhibition Garden and Cosmos featuring recently discovered paintings of classic Hindu stories and visions of the cosmic universe. Then return to the classroom to create your own miniature diorama that combines elements from these unique paintings and your vivid imagination.

Performance 21st Century Consort: October Surprise
Performance, with reception
The Smithsonian's 21st Century Consort has been performing riveting music of our time for more than three decades. Led by artistic director Christopher Kendall, the consort includes some of Washington's finest musicians. The theme of today's program reflects two scary events -- Halloween and the presidential election. The consort performs music fit for a D.C. season of high anxiety by Eric Moe, Jon Deak, Mark Kuss, and H.K.Gruber. Reception follows concert.

Family Celebration
(for children and families) Enjoy the holiday in a fun and safe environment; collect treats from more than 40 treat stations; walk along spooky trails and through haunted animal houses; participate in hands-on activities; listen to interpretive talks; and watch elephants, lions, and tigers stomp and smash pumpkins.
Notes:

• Animal houses close to the public at 4 PM and grounds close at 4:30 PM in preparation for this event.

Evening Telescope Viewing
Museum astronomer Sean O'Brien and local amateur astronomers bring out their high-power telescopes and share their knowledge of the night sky. Get away from the glare of city lights and see stars you never knew existed. Witness the thousands of stars that litter the dark night sky, and with the help of high-power optics, view nearby planets and stars up close.
Note:
• Please bring a red filter or brown paper bag to cover your flashlight.
• In case of clouds or rain, an amateur astronomer will lead a short alternate program.
