Lecture Andalusia: The Arts of Islamic Spain
2-Day Program: Reception and Recital
From the 8th century through the 15th, Muslims ruled much of the Iberian Peninsula. They called the area al-Andalus, known today as Andalusia. Al-Andalus enjoyed one of the world's most sophisticated cultures as such cities as Cordoba, Granada, and Seville became vibrant urban centers of creativity in literature, architecture, and the arts. The influence of al-Andalus extended far beyond its boundaries throughout the Mediterranean basin to Western Europe and eventually to the New World. Scholar Jonathan M. Bloom (Norma-Jean Calderwood University Professor of Islamic and Asian Art, Boston College) unfolds the rich artistic tapestry of this period tomorrow. This evening, enjoy Spanish food while listening to tenor and guitarist Ramon Tasat perform and explain guitar music from the al-Andalus period. Note: No door sales. Photo ID required for entrance.
$146, general admission; $100, members; call 202-633-3030
