In Search of Shanghai
Lecture |
Kenneth Hammond (China scholar and associate professor of history, New Mexico State University) explains how Shanghai's dramatic transformations over the centuries are a key to understanding China's development as a world power and as a society. In the late imperial period, Shanghai was a small town. By the 19th and 20th centuries, it had grown into a crossroads where Chinese and Western cultures mixed. After the Communist revolution, it was transformed into a leading example of the new socialist system. When China was re-opened to the global economy, it was yet transformed again.
