Family Day
Commemorate Earth Day 2008 with a clean up of Rock Creek. Assist staff of the Zoo, FONZ, and Friends of Rock Creek's Environment collecting trash along the banks of Rock Creek near Amazonia and the spectacled bear exhibit at the lower end of the Zoo. Come help beautify this important waterway and provide a cleaner habitat for local wildlife.

Family Day
Explore methods used to study the night sky throughout the ages, learn about the early Native American astronomy, and hear about the latest astronomical research.

Lecture Special Sale Anna Sofaer: "Chaco Astronomy: An Ancient American Cosmology"
Illustrated Lecture, with book signing
After years of research with her colleagues at the Solstice Project, Anna Sofaer reveals the latest discoveries about the astronomical significance of major Chaco buildings and their alignment with the paths of the sun and moon. The Solstice Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study of ancient cultures of the American Southwest. Book signing of Chaco Astronomy: An Ancient American Cosmology follows. This program is in conjunction with today's National Air and Space Museum's Explore the Universe Day.

Family Performance Ecosystems Alive
Discovery Theater Performance
(for ages 8-12) In this live-animal show, Jennifer Pennington (expert from Reptiles Alive!) introduces visitors to a black rat snake, a bearded dragon, a snapping turtle, and a boa constrictor and explains how these creatures thrive and survive in their environments. Learn some earth-friendly lessons about the impact of pollution, the necessity of conservation, and the importance of our planet's ecosystems. Celebrates Earth Day.

Lecture with book signing
Join Saloni Mathur (author, art historian, assistant professor of art history at University of California in Los Angeles) for a discussion of her critically acclaimed new book India by Design: Colonial History and Cultural Display. For the first time, her book carefully maps a series of historical events, from the mid-19th century to the present day, that made India fashionable to Western audiences. Her discussion includes an examination of India as represented in department stores, museums, exhibitions, painting, and picture postcards of the era. Book signing follows.
