Independent Film Series |
 |
 |
Note: Unless otherwise noted, programs run approximately 80 minutes. Programs are unrated but may contain adult content. A pair of recent works explores the cinematic concept of a film within a film from different perspectives. (2006) In Joanna Quinn's Dreams and Desires--Family Ties, the protagonist deploys her newly acquired digital video camera and shakes off her middle class, matronly demeanor to channel her inner Scorsese. Set at a wedding, the work combines lush, swirling animation and classic Brit humor. (2006, Portuguese with English subtitles) In the award-winning film Santiago, Brazilian Joao Salles revisits a languishing project. While the subject is no longer living, Salles investigates the life, philosophy, and eccentricities of the family major domo who shared his childhood home.
