Smithsonian Environmental Research Center

Research at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) focuses on the study of interactions of organisms with their environment.

Located on the Rhode River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, SERC provides researchers the opportunity to conduct long-term, intensive analyses of a complex landscape of interconnected ecosystems at the land-sea interface.

Smithsonian scientific divers at SERC:

Anson Hines - Interim Director and Ecologist (crustaceans)

Gregory Ruiz - Ecologist (marine invasive species)

Denise Breitburg - Ecologist (gelatinous zooplankton)

Richard Osman - Ecologist (invasive species)

Cynthia Gilmour - Ecologist (microbes)
