Office of the Inspector General
- The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) reports only to the Board of Regents and
Congress which gives the office great latitude to carry on its responsibility to conduct audits and investigations
relating to Smithsonian programs and operations, promote economy and efficiency by auditing operating policies and
procedures and recommending solutions and for detecting and preventing fraud, waste and abuse in Institutional programs and
- The IG also reviews and makes recommendations regarding existing and
proposed legislation and regulations affecting Smithsonian operations. Staff members have backgrounds as financial auditors,
criminal investigators and management analysts.
