Research Specialties and Interests

  • Conservation science
  • Characteriztion and identification of artists' materials using chromatography and spectroscopy, primarily GC-MS and FTIR microscopy
  • Technical studies of works of art
  • Study of deterioration and degradation of organic materials found in the SI collections

Recent Research Activities

Analysis of paint samples from Ocean Park #111, Richard Diebenkorn (with Ana Alba, HMSG); technical study of Janssen Shakespeare portrait (with Erin Blake, Folger Shakespeare Library and Museum); GC-MS evaluation of terpenes in spicebush leaves, Lindera benzoin (with Eric Lind, SERC).

Past Research Activities

Evaluation of distilled storage alcohols for re-use in natural history specimen storage (with Geoff Keel, Bill Moser and Jackson Tanner, NMNH) ; analysis of coating on degraded beads from Ndebele aprons (with Maria Fusco, NMAfA); analysis of clouding and efflorescent crystals found on glass windows in sealed display drawers (with Jessie Johnson, NMAI).

Professional Activities

Member of WCG, AIC, RATS, IIC, ICOM-CC, ACS.  Contributor to AATA.
