Olav Oftedal heads
the Nutrition Laboratory at the Smithsonian’s National
Zoological Park, where he has worked since 1978. A graduate
of Harvard (A.B.) and Cornell (Ph.D.) universities, Dr. Oftedal
is a recognized authority on the evolution of lactation, served
on the Committee on Animal Nutrition of the National Research
Council, National Academy of Sciences, and was the founding
president of the Comparative Nutrition Society. His research
has focused on nutritional requirements, nutritional ecology
and reproductive strategies of such diverse taxa as fish, lizards,
tortoises, primates, ungulates, bats, rodents, bears, seals
and cetaceans. Regina Eisert received her B.Sc. and PhD from
Lincoln University (Christchurch, New Zealand) and is particularly
interested in substrate metabolism in fasting and foraging mammals,
using the Weddell seal as a model. Their collaborative study
of Weddell seals in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, is funded by
the National Science Foundation.
