Abstract

Noel Broadbent earned his B.A. in anthropology and archaeology at San Diego State University in 1968. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in archaeology at Uppsala University in Sweden in 1979. Between 1983 and 1989, he was Director of the Center for Arctic Cultural Research at Umeå University. In 1990 he was hired by the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. to establish and manage the Arctic Social Sciences Program, a position he held until 1997. In 1996 he was awarded the Chair of Archaeology at Umeå University, a position he kept until late 2003. He is now involved in full-time research on the prehistory of the Saami people with funding from the National Science Foundation. Noel has published over 100 scientific papers and 5 books and has carried out research in North America, Europe, Africa, the Arctic and Antarctica.
