From the Permanent Collection, the Artists of the Spiral Collective, 1963-1965

In 1963 Hale Woodruff and Romare Bearden began an alliance of artists who met weekly to discuss their work, politics and civil rights. This exhibition looks at the brief activities of the group and includes works by Bearden, Woodruff, Robert Alston, Norman Lewis, Alvin Hollingsworth, and others—before and after their time in the Spiral Collective.

Change was in the air, some of it unsettling and threatening. Against a national background of Lyndon Johnson’s “great society,” anti-war protests, black power, feminism, and emerging gay rights, this exhibition focuses on events, people and challenges that transformed the city between 1963 and 1975.
