View the photographs and writings by Washington, D.C., elementary school students created during the Literacy through Photography project. The students spent time in museums to explore the works of noted photographers, learned the workings of the camera, and were sent home with a camera loaded with black-and-white film. The students then carefully plotted which images would best represent them or their communities. After the photos were developed, the students chose one to write about. The resulting essays, poems, and stories paint a vivid portrait of youth and community in the District of Columbia.
