Since ancient times, the Bay of Matsushima has been known for the natural beauty of its hundreds of pine-covered islands. For centuries, artists have long responded to the breathtaking landscape of Matsushima and its Buddhist temple complex. Their paintings and prints not only record an area now substantially altered by the recent earthquake and tsunami that struck on March 11, 2011, but they also pay homage to Japan, its history and its art, and the resilience of its people and land.
