Thomas Paine: A Hero Scorned

February 21, 1985 – August 11, 1985

Museum: Portrait Gallery

Location: 1st Floor, 7th Street Alcove

The humbly born, self-educated Englishman never gained full admission to the honor roll of individuals who led the American Revolution, although his words--"These are the times that try men's souls"--are among the most often quoted of the period. Likenesses of Paine in this small exhibition include a portrait by John Wesley Jarvis as well as caricatures by British, French, and American satiric artists.
