Thinking With Animals: African Images and Perceptions

March 24, 1982 – September 6, 1982

African Art Museum
950 Independence Ave., SW
Washington, DC

Location: 2nd Floor, 318 A St., NE

On view are portrayals of animals, the majority in sculpture, as reminders in African art of man's dependence on the animal world for physical and emotional well-being. In four thematic sections, animals are viewed as examples for human behavior; seen as representatives of power; considered as symbols of spiritual or supernatural power; and as mediators between man and the supernatural.
