The Bright Beneath: The Luminous Art of Shih Chieh Huang

The Bright Beneath: The Luminous Art of Shih Chieh Huang

September 3, 2011 – January 8, 2012

Museum: Natural History Museum

Location: 1st Floor, Center, Sant Ocean Hall's Ocean Focus Gallery

The artwork of Shih Chieh Huang explores the unusual evolutionary adaptations undertaken by the mysterious, deep ocean creatures residing in conditions inhospitable for humans. During Huang’s time as a Smithsonian artist research fellow, he explored the bioluminescent marine organisms that inspired this art installation. His creations, with their lights, computer parts, and plastic-tube appendages, evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity as they "float" in the darkness of the gallery.
