To commemorate the opening of the World War II Memorial on the National Mall, 4 U.S. flags flown at significant moments during the war are on view:
- the original flag raised on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima (the flag depicted in the iconic photograph)
- the original flag flown during Commodore Perry's opening of Japan was flown symbolically on the deck of U.S.S. Missouri when General Douglas McArthur accepted the surrender of Japan
- the flag carried by the first U.S. regiment to enter Berlin after it fell to the Soviets.
- a flag constructed using a captured Nazi flag, a blue dress uniform, and some salvaged red fabric during WWII.
